Saturnia Hot Springs: Where to Stay for the Free Falls and the Paid Pools (2026)

One Spring, Two Prices

Saturnia is the clearest free-versus-paid split of any springs destination in this guide, and the reason is geological rather than commercial. Thermal water surfaces inside the grounds of the Terme di Saturnia resort at a constant 99.5°F, pushing 500 litres a second into the lake at the centre of the property. From there it leaves. The resort's own page describes what happens next better than any guidebook: the water 'flows nearly two kilometres through the meadows of Saturnia to eventually burst out into the limestone and form the iconic waterfalls'.

Those waterfalls are the Cascate del Mulino, and they are free. No ticket, no gate, no operator, no closing time. The turquoise stepped basins in every Tuscany article are the downstream end of a resort's plumbing, and they cost nothing to sit in. The same water, upstream, is sold as a day ticket starting at €30 and a better day ticket starting at €90.

That is not an argument for skipping the resort. It is an argument for knowing exactly what you are buying, because the two ends of those two kilometres offer completely different things. Upstream you get loungers, changing rooms, a sauna and staff. Downstream you get a shallow limestone basin, a bar, and whoever else showed up. The water temperature is the one thing that is roughly the same — and even that is not identical, because the falls are open-air and two kilometres of meadow cooler than the source.

The chemistry is worth reading before you pack. The operator publishes 14 mg per litre of hydrogen sulphide, 462 cc of free carbon dioxide and 2.79 grams of mineral salts per litre. The hydrogen sulphide is the sulphur smell, it hangs over the whole valley, it tarnishes silver, and it does not wash out of a swimsuit easily. Bring one you are prepared to lose.

What the €30 Ticket Actually Buys — and What It Doesn't

This is the single most useful paragraph on the page, so here it is plainly: the cheap Terme di Saturnia day ticket does not get you into the spring lake you have seen photographed. The day spa splits into two tiers, both fed from the same spring, and the resort's own comparison is explicit. Hot Spring Pools admission, 'starting from €30', gives you the pools and the outdoor areas of the equipped park. Club admission, 'from €90', gives you the Hot Spring Pools and the Spring, plus indoor relaxation areas.

The park you get for €30 is not a consolation prize — it is 20,000 square metres with outdoor thermal pools, whirlpools, a hot-and-cold vascular path, a sauna and an Argillarium. But the famous lake, the one at the centre of the resort where the water surfaces, sits inside the Club perimeter. People buy the €30 ticket, walk in expecting the photograph, and do not get it.

There is a second trap in the cheaper tier. The white dress code is mandatory in both, and the resort spells it out: the cheaper admission does not include the Wellness Kit, so you bring a white towel and a white bathrobe or you rent them on arrival. The Club admission includes it. Budget accordingly, and note that a €90 floor plus rentals is a different holiday from a €30 one.

Hours are timed and seasonal. The Hot Spring Pools run 09:30 to 19:00 from 1 April to 31 October 2026, then 09:30 to 17:00 from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027. The Club runs daily 09:30 to 19:00 but splits into a morning entrance from 09:30 to 14:00 and an afternoon one from 14:30 to 19:00, with a 'Notturno Club' evening slot on Fridays only, 20:30 to 23:30. Both figures are 'starting from' floors, not a full price grid — the actual price moves with the day and the season, and the resort recommends booking online for weekends and holidays.

One group of guests escapes the whole question. A room at the resort includes what the property calls 'unlimited access' to the Natural Hot Spring, the thermal pools, the kneipp course, the Roman Bath, the sauna and the Turkish bath, with no hourly window published at all. If the water is the reason for the trip and the budget stretches, that is what the room rate is actually buying.

The Free Falls: Everything the Photos Leave Out

The Cascate del Mulino sit below an old stone mill on the Gorello stream, and the basins are not built. Continuous calcium-carbonate deposition has laid down stepped pools that the flow itself shapes, which also means the layout is not permanent — the Albegna river has flooded these terraces repeatedly, and the 2014 flood collapsed part of a pool. No 2026 damage report was found, but treat the arrangement of basins as a thing that changes rather than a fixed map.

Entry is free. As of the August 2026 check, no ticket, no numbers cap and no night-closure ordinance could be found in any primary or press source, and a local guide site describes the site as open 24/7. That absence is worth stating carefully rather than confidently: the Comune di Manciano's own server reset the connection on every attempt to read it, so this page can say no ticket or cap is in force as far as any reachable source shows, not that no rule exists.

What is not free is the car. The comune has charged for parking at the falls since 2023, and the regional press reports the tariff as €2.50 an hour for cars and motorbikes, dropping to €4 for the whole day for residents and guests of registered accommodation who display a pass — ask your hotel for one at check-in. The area is staffed, and campers, caravans and coaches are not admitted. Paid hours are 08:00 to 20:00 daily, and the parking area reopened for the 2026 season on 27 March 2026. You will still find pages online insisting parking here is free and unattended; those pages are out of date.

Then the facilities, or the lack of them. There are no changing rooms and no lockers. One small private bar at the falls has the only toilets and the only showers. The travertine is genuinely slippery underfoot, and local advice is to wear water shoes rather than go barefoot. Bring a towel or a bathrobe, bring something to put your phone in, and do not plan to change out of a wet costume anywhere civilised.

When to Go, and What to Do on Day Two

The water is a constant 99.5°F at source all year, which flips the usual seasonal logic. The colder the air, the better the soak, so autumn and winter are the good months here and August is the worst. The comune ties the crowd problem directly to weekends and the arrival of good weather, and its stated reason for organising the car park is that the site draws thousands of bathers. At a free site with one bar, no lockers and no staff in the water, that is a different experience from the one in the photographs. Dawn or after dinner, or come in November.

Note the resort's shoulder-season shift while you plan: the Hot Spring Pools close at 17:00 rather than 19:00 from 1 November, so a winter day ticket is a shorter day than a summer one for the same money.

For a second thermal day, the practical answer is Terme di Sorano, 31.9 km and 39 minutes away by the operator's own reckoning, in the tufa country near Pitigliano and Sovana. It is a warm spa rather than a hot one — spring at 99.3°F feeding a main pool held around 96.8°F — with a 370 sq m oval pool, a summer sports pool and two shallow pools for small children. On the August check date its full-day tariff was €22 Monday to Friday and €24 at weekends with a sun lounger, children up to 14 at €10.50 and €12. In February and March it opens only Friday to Sunday.

The other famous names in Tuscany each come with a warning. At Bagno Vignoni, about 60 km away, the 16th-century basin that forms the village square is for looking at: bathing is prohibited across the thermal area, including the lower pools of the Parco dei Mulini, where netting physically blocks access. The prohibition is consistently reported and visibly enforced by that netting, but the ordinance number and the €25–500 fine that circulate online have no primary confirmation — both the comune's site and the official tourism page are silent. Water there is reachable only through the village's hotel spas.

Bagni San Filippo, about 52 km away, is free again — the comune's page says 'ingresso libero e gratuito' — but describe the regime as unstable rather than settled. A €2 charge with €1 refunded on exit was introduced in August 2023 and scrapped by the new administration in July 2024, when La Nazione reported 'no entrance ticket, no numbers cap, no special supervision' while the mayor said a cap would still come. The widely repeated figure of a 125-person maximum contradicts that reporting and no ordinance establishing it was found, so it does not appear on this page. And Terme di Petriolo, the furthest at about 78 km, is simply shut: the establishment states it is closed from 4 July to 31 August 2026, reopening on 1 September, which covers our check date. Its free river pools on the Farma are believed unaffected.

The Lodging Reality Around Saturnia

Eleven independent properties were checked around the springs. Exactly one has thermal water of its own, and the precision matters: Agriturismo Le Cascatelle has a private thermal stream running through the grounds, not a built pool with steps and a rail. It is also 800 m from the free falls, which makes it the strongest honest match for anyone whose plan is the cascate with something warm to fall back on.

Everything else independent is a bed sold on proximity. 8380 Saturnia Terme B&B has no water at all and is still one of the best choices here, because 800 m to the falls and 200 m to the resort pools means the dawn walk is trivial and the parking tariff never applies to you. Casale Terre Rosse is 500 m from the resort by its own account and silent on the distance to the falls. Saturnia Tuscany Hotel has an infinity pool and a spa and makes no thermal claim anywhere — its own thermal page frames the terme as somewhere you drive to. Villa Acquaviva Wine Resort is a wine estate whose pool is outdoors and, in its own words, open only from about March to October.

Two properties have something specific worth reading before you book. Hotel Poggio Bertino publishes a 10% arrangement on admission to the Terme di Saturnia pools and wellness centre — €3 off a €30 ticket, €9 off a €90 one, which is a nice touch rather than a reason to choose a hotel. Pian di Saturnia Cataverna advertises free parking next to the Mulino waterfalls with direct access to the thermal water. If that holds it is worth real money against a €2.50-an-hour tariff, but the Comune di Manciano operates paid parking at that location and no corroboration of a private arrangement was found. Ask the property to confirm it before you rely on it.

Finally, the car. There is no realistic way to do this corner of the Maremma without one. The falls, the resort, Sorano at 31.9 km, Bagni San Filippo at about 52 km, Bagno Vignoni at about 60 km and Petriolo at about 78 km are all separate drives on rural roads. Public transport reaches Saturnia village by bus from Grosseto or Orbetello and goes no further. Rome Fiumicino is the practical arrival airport at about 150 km and 2h30 by road; Pisa is about 220 km and three hours. Campers are banned from both the falls car park and the resort car park, so a camper trip does not work here at all.

How This Page Was Put Together

Springs facts come from Terme di Saturnia and saturniadayspa.com, from the Comune di Castiglione d'Orcia and Terme di Sorano for the alternatives, and from Tuscan regional press for the parking rules — all read in August 2026. Hotel details come from each property's own website. Ratings, review counts and nightly rates come from a single Google Hotels snapshot for a 10–13 November 2026 stay, two adults. Where a property publishes nothing about water, this page records the absence rather than inferring anything from it.

Two sourcing problems shape what you have just read, and both belong in the open. First, no primary Comune di Manciano document could be retrieved — every attempt to reach comune.manciano.gr.it ended in a connection reset. The parking tariff, the 08:00–20:00 hours and the camper ban therefore rest on regional press reporting from Il Giunco, MaremmaOggi and Corriere di Maremma, and the tariff figures themselves date from the scheme's introduction in 2023. Paid parking was re-confirmed in April 2025 without republished rates, and the area was confirmed reopened on 27 March 2026 with no tariff published at all. Read €2.50 an hour and €4 a day as reported figures to confirm on arrival, not as verified 2026 prices.

Second, the resort's own two websites disagree with each other. The official price list at termedisaturnia.it still advertises the 2022/2023 season with 2022 rates — €26 midweek, €30 at weekends, a €6 Wellness Kit rental — while the live 2026 prices and hours sit on saturniadayspa.com at 'from €30' and 'from €90'. This page prints the contradiction rather than picking a side: the saturniadayspa.com figures are the current ones, and the older page is stale, which is worth knowing if you land on it from a search result. The same stale tree is the source of the children's policy, the rain-and-no-refund rule and the reduced disability rates, so re-confirm any of those directly before you travel. The two sites also disagree on how many outdoor pools the day park has — four on the current page, five on the older one.

Other disagreements left standing: the spring is 99.5°F per the operator and 98.6°F per a local site; the free falls are described as free and unattended parking by one popular information page, which contradicts the comune and the press. Two harvested properties, Il Giardino Etrusco and Dimora dei Magi, have been left off this page entirely — no official website could be located for either, only OTA and directory listings, and every distance figure attached to them is third-party straight-line data. There was not enough verifiable material to rank or characterise them fairly. And two claims that circulate widely are deliberately absent: the ordinance number and €25–500 fine at Bagno Vignoni, and the 125-person cap at Bagni San Filippo. Neither has primary confirmation, and the second is contradicted by the reporting.
